I secretly relish the chance to visit a new place, by air. I think one of the best views of a city is what you see on the way there; the woods, the lakes, the suburbs, the factories… I really do love them all. I get a bit romantic about the character of the factories, with steam creating momentary clouds which obscure the view. Nature from above seems so still and serene. I often feel sad to land at the end of the journey.
Recently we took one of the tourist cruises during sunset on the bay. The premise was not too thrilling, and knowing that it was a touristy activity, the expectations were not very high. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the outcome, and enjoyed it very much.
Looking at the Golden Gate Bridge, we were amazed at home such a structure exists. The history is that it took so long to find the bay because the fog would not lift. And to think that workers were there day and night inserting steel into freezing waters, at times unable to see further than a few feet in front of them. What a feat!
